Ice Skating Is FunThe history of ice skating is a long story that dates back hundreds of years to a time when people would attach animal bones to their feet to skate on the ice. Hundreds of years later we are flashing across the ice on blades of steel and ice skating has become the winter equivalent of swimming. In the winter everyone goes ice skating or at least tries to go ice skating depending on their skill level. From the famous Rockefeller Center in New York City to the Millennium Park ice skating rink in Chicago, people love to ice skate in the winter and an ice skating party is a popular way for children to celebrate their birthdays in the winter.
Let me give you a little ice skating tip if you are ever out skating with a large group of people. If you see a kid ice skating towards you then get out of their way. Kids love to zig zag in and out of traffic while they are ice skating and it can get a little dangerous. It makes me think that maybe a set of blinkers and horn would be a good ice skating accessory for the younger people that love to zip around the rink. But I used to do the same thing so I guess I shouldn’t complain. There is just something about getting up to speed when you are skating and feeling that wind in your hair that makes you want to go faster. Of course I have had my fair share of collisions as well which I would not recommend to anyone. The notion of very sharp blades flying through the air at face level, and neck level, after a collision that could have easily been avoided if the one causing the collision would have just slowed down is a frightening thought. I have seen too many things while ice skating to take anything for granted. So if you get a chance this winter head out and get on the ice and try some ice skating. If you are new to it then make sure you stay along the boards so you have something to grab on to for your own protection and the protection of everyone else. In my experience, it is never just one person that falls on an ice skating rink. If one person falls in the middle of the rink then, regardless of how much skating experience the other skaters have, someone else is destined to join the fallen skater on the ice. And while ice can be used to soothe the bumps and bruises caused by ice skating, ice makes for a really tough surface to land on and regardless of how long you have been ice skating no one is a match for the solid ice. So be careful out there but have a good time. Ice skating can be great exercise and it can be a lot of fun as long as you stay by the safety boards if you have to, make sure you stay on your feet at all times, and also make sure you watch out for the kids that love to weave their way through the crowd on in any ice skating rink. |
