Ice Hockey Is The Winter SportI have been an ice hockey fan since as long as I can remember and many of my first, and fondest, memories of growing up involve ice hockey in some way. I played with an ice hockey club when I was young and even though I never scored an ice hockey goal I still had the time of my life. I remember getting up to speed while skating and hearing the wind whistle past my ears. It was great. Then I switched to playing goal for a couple of years and that is where my ice hockey days ended. As I was growing it became too expensive to keep buying me new ice hockey equipment every year so I had to stop playing which means I never got a chance to play man’s ice hockey. I used to help them run the scoreboard at my local rink when I was a teenager but finances kept me from ever getting on the ice again. But I have always been able to play floor hockey and street hockey through the years which has always been a blast to me. Probably one of the most difficult days of my life was last year when my chiropractor told me that my two herniated discs in my back meant the end of my days of playing any kind of hockey. The really frustrating thing is that I had finally found an adult floor hockey league to play in and now I cannot play any more. It’s a shame because I love the game but my health is way more important than a game so I had to quit.
But I still enjoy following my favorite ice hockey team as I have enjoyed since I was very young. I remember the walls of my bedroom at home when I was growing up. Most boys my age had pictures and posters of their favorite rock bands on their walls or the latest poster of the new hot female of the week on their walls. My walls were covered, every inch of them, with hockey pictures. By the time I was done I have covered every inch of wall with hockey pictures. I even covered the ceiling. My brother and I shared a bedroom growing up and when we moved out of that apartment several years later the walls and ceiling on my side of the bedroom were totally clean after years of being protected by hockey pictures and my brother’s side of the room had dirty walls and a dirty ceiling. It was great and I loved every minute of it. Today ice hockey is expanding and now they have women’s ice hockey and I am still trying to get used to that. There are two sports that I always felt would be strange to see women playing. One of them is football and the other is ice hockey. But these girls can play and women’s Olympic ice hockey is very exciting. It just goes to show that ice hockey is the winter sport. |
