A Variety Of Winter Sports

Living in the northeastern United States I have become quiet the expert on winter sports and winter games. We find all kinds of ways to entertain ourselves in winter and sport is definitely one of the top things we use to keep ourselves busy. In the areas I am from we do not necessarily concern ourselves with winter fashion as we don’t have time to worry about what looks good. All we care about is whether or not it keeps the cold out and will it allow me to function during my winter sports.

Skiing is a very popular winter sport and my friends have been trying to get me to go skiing for years. My response is that I like my arms and legs where they are and have no desire to go skiing. But even in Upstate NY we have some very popular skiing locations that attract visitors from all over the country. The last couple of years have been tough on the skiing industry up here as snow seems to be in low supply, but they can make their own snow and that keeps the slopes busy.

Ice hockey is by far the most popular winter sport in the northeast. It is rare that you will find someone in one of the snow states of the United States that does not like ice hockey. We have ice hockey arenas all over the place and it is difficult to count the number of ice hockey leagues are currently running. All ages of people also love to get on frozen lakes, ponds, and rivers during the winter and play ice hockey. The fanatical success of the National Hockey League in the snow states only goes to prove the level to which ice hockey is a very popular snow sport.

Snow boarding is also becoming very popular as a winter sport. Snow boarders will usually go to the skiing locations to find truly challenging snow boarding courses but some will also build their own in large fields all over the snow states. Snow boarding is basically skate boarding but without the wheels. Snow boarders do many of the same tricks as skate boarders and even use courses similar to skate boarding with large half pipes and even huge bowl shaped courses for snow boarding.

Football is extremely popular all over the United States but in the snow states we have turned football into our own winter sport. Playing football is great fun but playing football in a foot of snow is even better. Hitting the ground when you get tackled does not hurt nearly as much and even the fastest of wide receivers are brought down to everyone’s level of ability when they have to wade through the snow. Football may be big in Texas but we have our own brand in New York and we like it.

The one winter sport that kids of all ages can enjoy is sledding. All you need is a snow covered hill and a cheap plastic sled and you can have hours of fun. Just be sure to be careful of those around you and watch out for that one guy that always falls off his sled and sends it rocketing into the crowd of people. Ah winter sports are truly the best sports.
